August/September 2023 |
| |
Welcome to another issue of Your North West Wedding. As always, our August/September issue is full of inspiration, but my favourite part has to be our cake feature. Over the last few years, wedding cakes have become more than just something sweet to eat, they are works of art that look stunning in photographs. When you start thinking of ideas for your big-day bake, begin by narrowing down how many guests will be attending; if you have 30 guests, then a three-tiered cake will be too much or too little if you have 200 friends and family coming. Once you have a rough number, your cake maker will be able to advise how many tiers you need and how much it will cost. Don’t worry about there being any leftovers, as you can always provide cake boxes for your guests to take home, or you can freeze the cake and enjoy it on your first anniversary.
If you’re struggling to find the perfect company, begin by searching online and looking in magazines for inspiration. Once you’ve found a business you like, look at their past work to see if they can create the design that you’re after. It’s also important to read their reviews, check if they’re in your price range and that they’re available on your wedding date.
When I got married, we purchased a personalised cake topper of us dressed in our wedding attire with our beloved cat, and I cannot recommend this enough. All our guests commented on how wonderful it was, and a year later, I still look at it every day. If you have the budget, it’s worth investing in a memento that you can display in your home after the wedding. Believe me, when I say the day goes by in a flash, so you’ll love having something to look at regularly.
Happy planning!

Eden Barn
Eden Barn is a 200-year-old Westmorland stone building that was transformed after the owner’s daughter held her wedding reception there in 2015. Family-run, the venue is full of rustic charm, from giant chandeliers and exposed stone walls to limestone-flagged floors and vaulted ceilings.
The expansive views, hand-thatched gazebo and landscaped grounds make Eden Barn a romantic haven that’s perfect for weddings.
Ceremonies take place in The Main Barn followed by the drinks receptions in the adjoining reception/bar area, which has wooden vaulted ceilings, stone-flagged flooring and cosy seating. The bespoke bar is hand-crafted from oak, and above it hangs a floral canopy. Boasting a new food preparation area, luxury toilet facilities and underfloor heating throughout, the space can seat up to 144 day guests on rustic wooden trestle tables, 136 on round versions and 200 for the evening celebration.
Al fresco vows take place under the hand-crafted pergola with the breathtaking Cumbrian countryside as a backdrop.
Alternatively, there are several churches nearby, including the charming St Theobald’s, which is only half a mile away.

| Unique gifts couples give each other on their wedding day |
| |
The team at hampers.com recently surveyed UK adults who have gotten married or attended a wedding in the past five years, with the goal of determining what the gifting landscape looks like for wedding season. In doing so, they spoke to almost 800 newlyweds from across the UK and a further 1,400 UK adults who have attended a wedding in the same time frame. Firstly, the study found that it's common for brides and grooms to buy each other a gift for the wedding day itself, with 65% stating they did this for their own wedding day. The average spend was found to be £115, with women most likely to purchase a pocket watch (24%) or a vintage bottle of alcohol (22%) and men most likely to purchase jewellery (37%) or personalised 'Mrs' clothing (19%)...
