Local photographer, David Rucker reveals why Venice is the ideal honeymoon destination.
“Venice is many things to many people. It's often called the city of love and is one of those special places that live up to the hype.
This floating city consists of 118 submerged islands that have been built up to create something unusual. My visit coincided with the world famous Carnival of Venice which is the Christian celebration of Lent. It's a sight to behold and sees people dressing up in costumes and masks, made me feel like I was stepping onto a Roman Polanski film set.
We also came across the Bridge of Sighs. Designed by Antonio Contino in 1600 it's known as the bridge prisoners would cross on their way to jail. In present day the bridge has become a symbol of romance. It's said that if a couple passes under it on a gondola that their love will last forever.
No trip to Venice would be complete without the world-famous gondola ride. Seeing the city up close literally took my breath away. It took us under the iconic bridges of Rialoto and the Bridge of Sighs near the famous St Mark's Square. The square is known for The Campanile di San Marco which apparently has the best vantage point to view the city.
The next morning, I decided to get up at the crack of dawn and photograph the city. I discovered that it's a city that never sleeps and it looks stunning as the sun rises. Our first trip to Venice was truly memorable and the impression its made can't be put into words."
