Regional experts serve up the latest in
wedding fare

Keeping your guests well fed is key to a successful celebration that your friends and family will be talking about for years to come. With the growing popularity of home baking, television cookery programmes and celebrity chefs, today’s newlyweds-to-be have never been more food savvy.

Couples are looking to add their own twist to the menu with demand for quality local and seasonal produce on the rise as people become increasingly interested in the provenance of the food they choose.

“Don’t forget to tell your caterers what you don’t like as well as what you do,” advises Ben Haynes of Thyme Out, West Didsbury. “Don’t be afraid to rip up the rule book either, wedding catering doesn't have to mean a sit-down three-course dinner anymore. Barbecues, mezzes and sharing mains are all the rage, so choose a caterer that’s happy to go off piste and design a menu around you,” he adds.

Turn to page 48 of the current issue for more advice and menu ideas.

Manchester provided the perfect city backdrop that Kelly and Rob wanted

Kelly and Rob met in 2007, while they were both working at Kellogg’s. “We were on the same team sat diagonally from each other,” recalls Kelly. “We started dating a few months later, keeping it quiet at first because of work – it was never an issue, but we couldn't work together now!”

Rob says, “I was first attracted to Kel because she understood my sense of humour – and she was hot! In reality we just clicked, and we’d often sit chatting away in the evenings for hours on end.”

He popped the question more than five years later in February, 2013. “I wasn't expecting it at all,” says Kelly. “It was the year of my 30th birthday and we planned a weekend trip to Berlin to celebrate. Rob proposed at the top of the TV tower. I thought we were just going for a nice meal, but I should’ve guessed something was going on – he’s never that organised!”

Win a dream honeymoon in the Seychelles, worth £5,900

Enter now for your chance to win a week at the luxurious Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa

If jetting off to an exclusive island with a 2.5km white beach surrounded by turquoise seas and tropical forests sounds like your kind of honeymoon, then Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa could be the perfect destination for you. Situated on Silhouette Island, just a 20 minute helicopter transfer from Seychelles International Airport in Mahé and a 45-minute boat trip via Bel Ombre Jetty, the resort offers guests five spacious, contemporary private and peaceful villa categories, all infused with tropical chic style. From the fabulous Presidential Villa, offering panoramic views of the mountains or pristine beach, to the Deluxe Hillside Pool Villas and Deluxe Beachfront Pool Villas which each feature a private pool and large circular bath; or the Beach Villas dotted along the seafront just steps from the beach, or the beautiful Garden Villas set in the lush natural surroundings of the island, all offer a back-to-nature experience with the amazing amenities offered by this luxury destination.

At the heart of the resort, by the stunning landscaped infinity pool, lies a selection of bars and dining venues, including the Italian Portobello Restaurant with its expansive wine cellar serving exclusive wines from all over the world, while beachside Sakura serves sushi and contemporary East Asian cuisine. Central to the Labriz experience is the Grann Kaz Plantation House, which has been expertly renovated and allows guests to experience the grandeur of a Seychellois plantation house. The ground floor is home to a traditional Creole restaurant, while Lo Brizan bar offers the chance to relax by the pool after dinner with cocktails and live music.

If all this doesn't sound relaxing enough, then you can visit Silhouette Spa at Labriz, a strikingly beautiful space which offers indoor and outdoor couples therapy suites and a comprehensive spa menu. Then you can explore the marine world of the Seychelles from the Eco Centre – the resort offers the only five-star National Geographic PADI diving centre in the region. Back on dry land you can take fascinating guided mountain walks through the jungle with the resident naturalist to explain the amazing sights and wildlife.

The combination of luxury, first-class design, a breathtaking setting and heritage makes this an ideal honeymoon destination.

Town Hall, Manchester

The epitome of grandeur, the Town Hall Manchester is regarded as one of the finest examples of Neo-gothic architecture. This Grade I listed building was designed by renowned architect Alfred Waterhouse, and is easily one of the most iconic venues in the city, complete with plenty of character; these ceremonial surrounds give you several striking big-day backdrops to choose from.

Say your vows in The Lord Mayor’s Parlour, The Reception Room, The Conference Hall or The Great Hall, with space for 100, 120, 130 and 500 guests respectively. All of these graceful and elegant spaces can also hold your reception, but we urge you to also step outside to the Bees Area located directly outside The Great Hall – we guarantee you’ll fall in love with the stained-glass skylights and the distinctive mosaic floor.

Have your cake and eat it

Q We’re both really looking forward to choosing our cake, but don’t want to start planning it too early. When’s the best time to arrange tastings and ultimately make the final decision?

A Cake maker Suzanne Thorp says:
Go for a tasting consultation as soon as possible where you can discuss the theme of your day, colours, flowers and feel. Your cake maker can then customise a cake for you from something they've made before, or create something totally bespoke. With us, the latter option would involve two meetings as we like to create a couple of sketches and then file a copy away so this design is not created for anyone else.

If your wedding is this year then I recommend you come and see me fairly soon as the weekends are booking up. If you’re getting married next year, I’d recommend a visit from around October. The all-important final details can be decided just a couple of months before you tie the knot, so don’t panic.
